Thread once came on wooden spools, which made wonderful playthings once the thread was used up. Two good-sized ones on a piece of string made a pretty serviceable bolo.
Serviceable enough that, if thrown at your sister's head, it could inflict enough pain to cause a fight savage enough to cause both of you to be spanked by your Grandmother.
